Dream Vacation
By
J.H. Di Benedetto
Summary
Thanks to her unique ability to step into other people's dreams, Dr. Sara Alderson has solved murders, unraveled conspiracies and saved lives. But when a crisis hits close to home, even her supernatural gift might not be enough to avert disaster.

On a family vacation to Paris, Sara's fifteen-year-old daughter Grace disappears without a trace. The only way to find her is through Sara's dreams. But her gift has taken an unwanted vacation, and without it, Sara has no idea how to rescue Grace. In a foreign city, with no clues, and her dreaming talent failing her for the first time, Sara must figure out another way to find Grace before it's too late.

Excerpt
Sara is somewhere high up, looking down over Paris.  The Eiffel Tower – there’s nowhere else this could be.  She wonders whose dream it is, and then she sees the girl.
Blonde, young – a high schooler.  Hair down to her – Sara has to blink, look away, look again.  Hair in a ponytail all the way down her back, and then curled up around her until Sara can’t see where it ends.  It’s a dream, she reminds herself, not questioning what she’s seeing.  It doesn’t have to make sense.
She’s seen this girl before, but where?  The memory comes back almost immediately – last night, in another dream.  She was on the plane.  And here she is, and the boy, too.  Definitely her brother.
Sara watches as the siblings peer far below to the ground, looking for something – or someone.  After a while, the girl lets out a little shout.  “There!  In the blue!  Do you see?”  The boy follows her finger, pointing hundreds of feet down.  “I knew we’d find him again.  We’ve got the money, we just need to get down to him now.”
And then the girl burrows into the endless tangle of her hair, pulls up what looks like it actually is the end, and Sara has to laugh; now she understands the hair.  She remembers this fairy tale from her childhood.  The girl begins to tie her hair to one of the girders.  She ties a double-knot, then pulls on it, hard.  The knot doesn’t slip.
“Ready, Jamie?”  The boy nods, and throws his arms around her neck.  She takes hold of her hair about halfway down her back, and, in one fluid motion, leaps off the Tower.
Sara knows what to expect now; she isn’t even surprised when she looks over the edge to find the girl rappelling down the tower a few bouncy steps at a time…

EXCERPT:
When we reached the market, I tied his leash firmly to a parking meter.  "You sit here while I get some dog food for you." He barked when I turned toward the door.  I spun around and shushed him when my cell rang.  "Richard here." I turned to hear the phone and naturally Lardass barked when I turned my back.  "Quiet down, I'm trying to talk."
"Richard, sweetie?" It was Tiffany calling from pregnant Julie's.  "Richard, who are you yelling at?" Lardass continued barking unless I faced him.  "The dog."
"What dog?" I explained Dwayne's visit.
"As long as he comes back to get him, I guess that's okay."
"Excuse me?  Did I need your approval to get a dog?"
"I just think we should've talked about this first."
"I told you what happened. It wasn't a matter of discussing it first.  I now have a dog, temporarily, I hope."
"Well, I called to tell you I found the perfect wedding dress here in Florida so please don't meet me at the airport Friday, because I don't want you to see it."
Her instructions sounded like another case of me having no say in this affair, and Lardass kept barking over Tiffany.  I finally turned to the dog and yelled, "That's enough Lardass!"
In my ear I heard "What?  What did you call me?  Why are you acting like this?"
"Tiffany... Don't go ballistic on me - it's not you."
"Then what are you talking about?"
"The dog's name is Lardass, but I didn't name him."
"Maybe we can call him something else - let's talk about it when I get back.  I gotta go - luvya."
I put my phone in my pocket and looked at Lardass.  "Don't give me those big puppy eyes.  You may be able to hypnotize women with that look, but it doesn't work with me.  Now sit here quietly.  If I hear one bark out of you, you're getting the cheap dry stuff."
Even after the doors closed behind me I could hear him whining and barking.  Why did I agree to take him in?  In the long run, it would probably be better for him and for me if I put him in a doggie hotel for a couple of weeks.  Note to myself: research on doggie hotels when I get home.  The checker noticed the giant sized bag of dog food I dropped on her conveyor and glanced at me over the top of her glasses.  "That wouldn't happen to be your dog doing the car alarm imitation outside, would it?"
I swiped my ATM card, "No, I'm just watching him for a friend - he's going through separation anxiety." She nodded knowingly, "Yeah, my kids got a puppy from grandma a couple of years ago and all that dog did for a solid week was cry, pee and poop. Lotsa luck." She tore off the receipt and handed to me.
Of course Lardass shut up as soon as he saw my face.  Or maybe it was the giant bag of dog food I had on my shoulder.  Whatever the reason he was quiet now. He'd gotten his leash wrapped around the parking meter so I untangled him and walked back to my apartment.  I seriously wondered what I was going to do with this dog.  I didn't really want to dump him on any of my friends, but what am I gonna do with him while I'm at work?
I called the cell number that Dwayne left for me but he had his phone off.  Keeping Lardass on a short leash was a real challenge.  He pulled hard and with only one hand free, I had to fight his urges to chase everything that moved and pee on everything that didn't.  Leave it to Dwayne to screw up my life.  And after all the time I spent with him when he broke his leg in high school?  He was always the guy that yelled, "Hey - watch this!" just before he landed on his head... or face... or ass!
My cell phone rang again and it was in my pocket.  I had a handful of Lardass in one hand and a twenty-five pound bag of dog food in the other.  While I hung onto the leash I dropped the dog food on the sidewalk and reached for my phone.
"Hi Richard sweetie... Listen, I'm sorry I snapped at you about the dog.  I know you have a good heart - you're always trying to help someone else - That's why I love you."
"Thanks Tiff, I love you too, but right now I've got my hands full with this dog.  Can I call you later?
"Are you blowing me off?"
Lardass had now wrapped his leash around my legs four or five times.  "No Tiffany, I just have to get this... Hang on." The dog started off down the sidewalk, spinning me around.  I folded my phone shut and stuck it in my pocket, grabbed the bag of dog food on the second revolution and lurched off down the street.

Something’s Cooking at Dove Acres
By
Will Zeilinger

Summary
When her Great Aunt Helen dies in a tragic barbeque explosion, young Maddie Van der Wald inherits the huge house and estate on an isolated part of Catalina Island. She reluctantly moves in amid rumors of ghosts and buried treasure
If she doesn’t follow the terms of the will, which forces her to live on the island and give up her life back in L.A., her greedy cousin stands to inherit it all.
She meets eco-activist Luke Garrett and tells him of her plans to turn the mansion into a Bed and Breakfast inn. Her ideas go nowhere when she is plagued by debts and legal problems. To pay her bills, she agrees to allow a cell phone tower on her property. Everyone turns against her, including her best friend Jojo.
Maddie’s life has become a total mess. She wonders if her boat trip to this island was a trip to Hell. Whatever the outcome, she’s ready to fight for what is rightfully hers.

Excerpt
"What's all the noise Luke?  I'm trying to make some phone calls and... What in God's name do we have here?" With a twinkle in his eye, he extended his hand,  "Son, aren't you going to introduce us?"
"Oh sorry Dad, this is Maddie Van der Wald, Helen Devine's Grand Niece.  She's living up at Dove Acres. Maddie, my father, Charles Garrett."
From inside my get up all he probably heard me say was, "plmmph mummph yu.” I pulled my mask down, "A pleasure to meet you Mr. Garrett." I think that's what finally came out.
He chuckled, "I'm glad to meet some of Helen's family." and returned to his office shaking his head.
"Luke, I am never going to forgive you for this... ever!”
He walked me over to the dumpsters. “Just climb up that ladder on the end and hop in.”
“Can’t we open the big doors on the back instead of climbing in?”
“If I open up the back it will spill out and get mixed up with the others.”
I pulled myself up the metal rungs on the side and peered down into the cavernous container when it dawned on me the only view Luke had was my butt.
“You could at least show me the best way to get in here... Luke!”
"Oh, okay.  Hang on."
Once I got his attention away from my rear, he climbed up the other side and swung his legs around.
"Just swing your legs around and drop down onto a bag.”
I did, landing on my back on top of a bunch of bags with pokey things in them.  I was not happy. All the bags looked the same, so I tore one open.  Papers, rags, old clothes dead flowers and old newspapers... no success.  I tore open the next one, nothing.
“I could help you if I knew what you were looking for,”
“All right.  I’m looking for a silvery pin almost four inches across that looks like two overlapping leaves with...er...rhinestones or crystals all over it…”
Luke tore into one and found a shoebox full of a bunch of junky looking pins and other jewelry.  He held up a big pin between this thumb and forefinger.
“Um...does this look like it?”
Quickly I grabbed it from his hand.  With it tightly in my giant, yellow gloved hand I pulled my mask back down and planted a big kiss right on his lips.
“Well - um, thanks for your help.”
“Okay,” was all he said.
That’s when I discovered there was no way to get out.  I jumped up and down until Luke lifted me up high enough to grab the top edge.  He put his palm squarely on my butt and pushed me to the top like he was making a basketball shot.  I was so humiliated.
“May I please have that shoe box?”
He handed it up to me.  With it tucked under my arm I climbed down the ladder and ran to my car, still wearing all that stuff, and got out of there as quickly as I could. But now I'll have to come back to return the dumb outfit.  Maybe I’ll just mail it.

Billy, who had never left Boston before he enlisted and was sent to Officer Candidate School, is not sure how good a detective he really is.
